Frequently asked questions about the FreeStyle Libre 2 system

Can FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors be used with FreeStyle Libre products? 

FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors will be made available to use with FreeStyle LibreLink app. In order to use FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor, you need to ensure you have a compatible smartphone and the latest FreeStyle LibreLink app downloaded.

If you’re using the FreeStyle Libre sensor with the FreeStyle LibreLink app, you may go on to switch to the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor, but if you’re using your FreeStyle Libre sensor with the FreeStyle Libre reader you will have to switch to the FreeStyle LibreLink app. The FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor will only work with the FreeStyle LibreLink app. You may continue to use the FreeStyle Libre sensor with the FreeStyle Libre reader if you do not have a compatible smartphone.

Does the FreeStyle Libre 2 system have the same indications as the FreeStyle Libre system (e.g. paediatrics, pregnancy)?

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system in Australia is is a real time, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device indicated for measuring interstitial fluid glucose levels in people (age 4 and older) with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The indication for children (age 4 - 17) is limited to those who are supervised by a caregiver who is at least 18 years of age.

When will fully subsidised FreeStyle Libre 2 be available on the NDSS (CGM subsidy scheme)?

From 1 August 2021, FreeStyle Libre 2 is listed on the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), under the same eligibility criteria for Australians living with Type 1 diabetes as FreeStyle Libre. If you meet the eligibility criteria of the Continuous Glucose Monitoring Initiative, you can access FreeStyle Libre 2 through the NDSS. FreeStyle Libre 2 is a new generation CGM with the same features of FreeStyle Libre plus the addition of optional real time alarms and improved accuracy. How many alarms does the FreeStyle Libre 2 system have?

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system has 3 alarms:

  • Low Glucose Alarm - an alarm will notify you when your glucose falls below a level you set
  • High Glucose Alarm - an alarm will notify you when your glucose rises above a level you set
  • Signal Loss Alarm - an alarm will notify you when the glucose alarms you set are not available because your Sensor has lost communication with the Reader for 20 minutes
