We’re for more choice to help Australians living with diabetes – it is our #1 priority
2 February 2020
We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the Federal Government and have Australia join the list of 34 countries where FreeStyle Libre is broadly subsidised, starting 1 March 2020. The addition of Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre to the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) provides an important choice for eligible Australians living with Type 1 diabetes, freeing them from the hassles of routine finger-pricks, without daily calibration.
The updated eligibility criteria announced by the Federal Government is a positive step towards more inclusive access. As the #1 sensor-based glucose monitoring system used worldwide, FreeStyle Libre provides technology that is revolutionary and accessible.
The details of the updated eligibility criteria announced by the Federal Government where FreeStyle Libre will be fully subsidised are:
- Children and young people aged under 21 years living with Type 1 diabetes
- People living with Type 1 diabetes aged 21 years or older who have valid concessional status
- Women living with Type 1 diabetes who are actively planning pregnancy, pregnant, or immediately post-pregnancy
- Children and young people under 21 years with conditions very similar to Type 1 diabetes who require insulin
We’re keenly aware of the impact this breakthrough Abbott technology has had on the lives of thousands of Australians - this is reinforced by a Health Technology Assessment (HTA) review that recognised improved health and quality-of-life outcomes.
We will continue to advance our work with the Federal Government and the Department of Health towards greater access of what is becoming recognised as an essential technology for all insulin-using people living with diabetes.

We thank our customers for their ongoing support as we continue work towards greater access of FreeStyle Libre in Australia for all insulin-using people living with diabetes. You are our inspiration!
