Accessing the NDSS CGM subsidy for Australians living with type 1 diabetes

NDSS subsidised access to the new FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor

Subsidised access to the new Libre 3 Plus sensor is now available to Australians living with type 1 diabetes who are using the mylife YpsoPump with mylife CamAPS FX for automated insulin delivery.

Please note, the Libre 3 Plus sensor is not available as a standalone CGM device in Australia and is not compatible with devices and tools in the Libre system, including the FreeStyle Libre reader, FreeStyle Libre 2 reader, and the FreeStyle LibreLink12 app. This also means that sensor glucose readings cannot be uploaded to LibreView,24 and cannot be shared with LibreLinkUp21 connections.

The information on this page will help you prepare for accessing subsidised Libre 3 Plus as either a new user or an existing mylife Loop user upgrading from another CGM device.

How to switch to the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus or Libre 3 Plus sensor from another device

The Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus sensors are the latest innovations to the Libre system. To switch to these sensors from your current Libre sensor or to upgrade from a competitor device, follow these steps:

  1.  Complete the following switch form Continuous and Flash Glucose Monitoring Access Form: Updating or Ceasing Access
  2. Have your authorised diabetes healthcare professional sign the form.
  3. Your healthcare professional can then lodge the form through the NDSS online portal, or it can be lodged by emailing it to info@ndss.com.au, or post it to GPO Box 9824 in your capital city.

Once the form has been processed, you will receive a notification from the NDSS. Further information is available at ndss.com.au or by calling the NDSS Helpline on 1800 637 700.

Abbott’s MSAC Application 1786 – funding for CGM Type 2 insulin-using diabetes population

Abbott is committed to working with MSAC to expand access to FreeStyle Libre (FSL) for Australians with type 2 diabetes using insulin, building on the proven benefits already seen in the funded access for type 1 diabetes. Recommendation 15 of the 2023 Parliamentary Inquiry into Diabetes identified insulin-using subpopulations as priority groups for FSL access, and this recommendation, recognised by the PICO Advisory Subcommittee (PASC), needs to be considered pragmatically by MSAC. Access for people with insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes is already established in many countries, and we will continue to advocate strongly for people living with diabetes, their loved ones, and carers.

We recommend using the Libre 2 Plus sensor with the LibreLink12 app (free to download) - it enables the option of sharing glucose data and alarms in real-time with designated family and friends via the LibreLinkUp app. Users can also experience the ease of sharing of glucose reports and data with healthcare professionals via LibreView.
